TV Screen Sundays

Overall the first part of the year blows. The weather sucks, the holidays are over, you have already given up on your New Year’s Resolution (me too & no judgment here), and we are long way from spring. Do you feel depressed yet? Turn that frown upside down friends, I have a plan to get you through. A therapist once told me that looking forward to something gives you as much satisfaction as actually doing the activity. I figured if I had something to be excited about every Sunday then I will make it through the week in a good mood. Now you might be saying “Hey Hol, I am not a fan of travel or leaving my house for that matter, what can I be excited about?” . I hear you my hermit soul-mate! I too am not a fan of getting out when the temperature is cold. Lucky for us the end of January and the month of February gives us some serious televised events, and they all land on Sunday. Change the batteries on the remote, stock up on your favorite beverage, and call your couch loving friends to bask in the warm glow of your flat screen.

January 29th - TBS / TNT - 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards

The SAG Awards are considered one of Hollywood’s major awards for movies and television. Nominations for the awards come from two committees, one for film and one for television. 2100 members of the Screen Actor Guild union, randomly selected each year, with the full membership (165,000 as of 2012) available to vote for the winners. You hear a lot of “This means more to me because it’s from my peers” in acceptance speeches. Whether you are a film and/or TV connoisseur or just want to see beautifully dressed celebs, the SAG awards delivers. If you are trying to handicap the Academy Awards I suggest tuning into the SAG Awards, they are usually a good forecast for Oscar winners. Patron Tequila is the signature booze for the SAG Awards so here is the recipe for a badass Patron perfect margarita.

Perfect Patron Margarita

1.5 oz Patrón Reposado
1 oz Gran Marnier Liqueur
.75 oz Fresh lime juice
.25 oz Simple syrup, to taste
Lime wheel for garnish
Kosher salt (optional)

Combine ingredients in the cocktail shaker and shake with ice to chill. Strain into a salt-rimmed martini or rocks glass and garnish with a lime wheel.

February 5th - FOX - Super Bowl LI 2017

The Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots will face off at NRG Stadium in Houston Texas. Super Bowl Sunday is like an indoor 4th of July, this is the day we worship Merica’s favorite sport. Luke Bryan is belting out the National Anthem, Lady Gaga is performing the halftime show, and Budweiser will probably have a commercial about a horse or a dog that will make you cry. Between the beer, advertisements, and Gaga’s hip thrusts there is a football game. If “your team” is actually in the Super Bowl or you have a large wager on the game don’t ruin it for the casual fair weather fan. Most of us have no commitment or loyalty to who wins the game, we are all about the booze and crock pots of processed meats and cheese. If you intend on being a psychotic kill joy who wants to replay 3rd downs and fast forward through the GoDaddy Commercials, you keep your ass at home!

A case of beer and a bottle of Fireball Whiskey are solid purchases to bring to any Super Bowl Party, no recipes necessary.

February 12th - CBS - The 59th Annual Grammy Awards

If you live under a rock and aren’t on Facebook you have probably haven't been exposed to Carpool Karaoke with James Corbin. Now that I have told you about it, You Tube that shit ASAP. James will be appropriately hosting the Grammy’s which is perfect because he knows music and he is used to dealing with temperamental celebs on his late night show. Hopefully he can keep the show moving along, but we all know we watch in hopes of some sort of band meltdown or Kanye moment. The Grammy’s make me feel old, although I do know that The Weekend is not a band. Gather with friends and feel completely out of touch and unhip over a few bottles of Rose´. When someone asks why the girl from Sam and Cat is dressed up like a dominatrix let them know that Ariana Grande is quite the accomplished vocalist.

February 19th - HBO - Big Little Lies Or FS1 - UFC Fight Night Lewis Vs Browne

I will be pouring myself and my girlfriends a glass of zinfandel while tuning into the premier of Big Little Lies on HBO. The show is based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling book titled the same. Reece Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shaline Woodley play the role of lovely Stepford-ish mothers of first grade children. Sounds kinda boring, but then you throw in sex and murder and you’ve got yourself a hit! My husband will be in another room watching UFC Fight Night. Chris predicts Derrick Lewis will beat Travis Browne due to a bunch of reasons, but I kind of zoned out after I asked…at least I remembered his pick.

February 26th - ABC - The 89th Academy Awards

The Academy Awards, better known as The Oscars, is considered the American awards event hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Watching celebrities walk the Red Carpet into the event has become as watch-worthy as the actual awards ceremony. I was psyched to read that Jimmy Kimmel is this years Oscars host. Although Kimmel works and lives in LA, he seems very down to earth. With all the political rhetoric being thrown around, he will bring levity to the show. You don’t need to be a film snob to enjoy the Oscars. I haven’t seen any of the Animated Short Films nominated, but that won’t stop me from circling Pear Cider and Cigarettes for the win. It is the same concept I use when betting on horses. I whipped up an Oscar ballot and drinking game to fuel the award show fun. Print out a few ballots and fill them out before the show begins. You get a point for every category you guess correct. If you are playing the drinking game too, the most coherent player with the most points at the end of the show wins.

Grab a bottle or case of your favorite beverage and order a few pizzas. I love drinking cold beer and eating a few slices of deep dish while watching hangry actresses maneuver through a crowd in couture.

Cheers!

Holly
